How to Set Boundaries with Family over Text
A family boundary message explains what you are willing to discuss and what you will do if the conversation continues in the same way. It does not need to prove that the other person is wrong or diagnose why they behave as they do. Choose a boundary you can actually maintain.

Name the specific behaviour
Refer to the repeated comments, questions or insults you want to stop. Avoid sweeping claims such as “you always ruin everything.” A specific request gives the other person a clearer understanding of what needs to change.
Describe your own next step
You can say that you will stop replying, leave a conversation or return to the topic later. Choose an action that is within your control and appropriate to your circumstances. Do not threaten consequences that you do not intend to carry out.
Example: three ways to reply
A relative keeps criticising your personal choices in messages. You want to stay in touch but stop discussing those choices.
Gentle
I’d like us to stay in touch, but I don’t want to keep discussing my personal choices. Let’s talk about something else.
Direct
I’m not discussing this decision further. Please stop sending comments about it.
Firm
I’ve said I’m not discussing this. If the comments continue, I’ll stop replying to this conversation.
If the reply becomes another argument
You can repeat the boundary once without adding a new defence of your decision: “I understand you disagree. I’m still not discussing it.” You do not have to answer each criticism before ending a conversation.
Review what the message commits you to
Check that the boundary is yours, rather than a demand that someone feel differently. If you rely on the relative for housing, care or money, consider the practical consequences before sending. If there are threats or you feel unsafe, prioritise support and safety rather than finding the perfect text.
